Research

Much of Professor Veer's research is now focused on surgery for snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and Otology. Below are the areas of current research.

UARS & the TAB Score — A New Way to Diagnose Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome

For decades, Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS) has been one of sleep medicine's most under-diagnosed conditions. Patients exhausted from a night of effortful breathing through a narrowed airway are routinely told their sleep study is "normal" — because the standard AHI metric only counts full apnoeas and oxygen drops, neither of which UARS produces.

Working with sleep physiologist Michael Storey, Professor Veer has developed a new sleep-study analysis suite designed to identify these patients without the discomfort of oesophageal manometry. The flagship metric — Thoracoabdominal Asynchrony Burden (TAB) — measures how out-of-phase the chest and abdomen become during a night of effortful breathing, broken down by sleep stage and body position. It sits alongside Ventilatory Burden (VB), RERAs, and flow-limitation analysis to give a fuller picture of respiratory effort than standard reports allow.

The service is offered as a re-analysis of existing sleep studies or as part of a new home sleep study through the practice. Read the full UARS & TAB service page →

Nocturnal — K-Complex Sleep Training App (In Development)

K-complexes are the brain's natural mechanism for staying asleep through non-threatening background noise. Light sleepers — particularly those whose sleep has stayed fragmented after pregnancy, parenting, or a period of stress — appear to have a weakened K-complex response.

Professor Veer and Michael Storey are developing Nocturnal, a progressive web app that uses a carefully ordered sequence of overnight sound textures to support the K-complex response. The work has involved overnight EEG recordings on the team's own heads, exploring which sound characters produce the strongest measurable response — and which preserve REM sleep rather than blunting it.

Nocturnal is in active development and not yet released. Read the project overview →

Side Sleep Pro & Dual Comfort Pro — Clinician-Designed Sleep Pillows

Building on a 6,044-patient NHS audit showing that 60.3% of OSA patients no longer met the clinical threshold for sleep apnoea when sleeping on their side, Professor Veer designed two pillows specifically to make sustained side sleeping comfortable and reliable.

The Side Sleep Pro is a two-piece head-and-body system engineered to keep the user in the recovery position throughout the night, with CPAP compatibility built in. The Dual Comfort Pro is a double-sided anti-snoring head pillow with adjustable foam fill, designed as an accessible entry point for snorers and patients with mild positional OSA. Both are sold via iwantgreatsleep.com.

British Association of Sleep Surgeons (BASS) — Founding Chair

Professor Veer is the Founding Chair of the British Association of Sleep Surgeons (BASS) — the UK's professional society for surgeons working on snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea. BASS exists to develop training, audit and shared standards across the small but growing community of UK sleep surgeons, and to make multidisciplinary surgical pathways available outside a handful of specialist centres.

Alongside this, Professor Veer leads the Advanced Sleep Health Collaborative (ASHC) — the UK's largest multidisciplinary sleep surgery MDT — from the Royal National ENT Hospital, part of University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Read more about the MDT programme →

Hypoglossal Nerve Stimulation — Inspire, Genio & Restera Implantation

Professor Veer is one of the most experienced UK surgeons implanting hypoglossal nerve stimulators — small implanted devices that detect the patient's breathing pattern and gently stimulate the hypoglossal nerve to keep the airway open during sleep. He has worked across all three current device platforms — Inspire, Genio, and most recently Restera — and is among the first UK surgeons to implant Restera.

Alongside the clinical work, he contributes to the design and clinical development of next-generation stimulator platforms, with a particular interest in reducing surgical complexity and improving access. Read more about Inspire & Genio → · Read about Restera →

PTLTbE — A New Classification for Drug-Induced Sleep Endoscopy (DISE)

Published in Sleep and Breathing in 2020, Professor Veer's PTLTbE classification is a new system for reporting drug-induced sleep endoscopy findings. It separates tonsillar obstruction from true lateral pharyngeal wall collapse — a distinction the older VOTE classification glossed over — and has been shown to improve interobserver reliability when interpreted by trainees.

PTLTbE is now used as the default reporting system in Professor Veer's NHS and private practice and is being adopted internationally by other sleep surgery centres. Read the full guide to PTLTbE →

Free Sound & Wellbeing Tools — Focus Noise, Womb Soundscape, Tinnitus Sound Generator

Alongside the clinical work, Professor Veer has built a small library of free, browser-based sound tools intended as educational resources for patients and their families:

  • Focus Noise — a customisable brown / pink / white / rain noise generator for concentration, masking tinnitus, or supporting sleep onset.
  • Womb Soundscape — a synthesised in-utero acoustic environment with maternal lub-dub heartbeat, breathing swell, foetal heartbeat overlay and movement & fluid sounds, designed to settle unsettled newborns.
  • Tinnitus Sound Generator — an interactive tool for characterising the frequency and texture of your tinnitus to share with your audiologist.

All audio is generated in the user's browser. Nothing is streamed, recorded, or sent anywhere. These tools are educational and self-help in nature — not medical devices and not treatments.

Appointment as Professor at MAHE University, India

Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) consistently ranks among the top universities in India and is globally recognised for innovative research and quality education. Professor Veer's appointment reflects his contribution to ENT and sleep surgery internationally.

Over the coming years he plans to visit India regularly to teach advanced surgical techniques for sleep disorders and to support the establishment of hypoglossal nerve stimulation programmes in Indian centres — with the goal of making these cutting-edge treatments more accessible to patients in South Asia.

National Ear Surgery Competition — Royal Society of Medicine

In 2014, Professor Veer was honoured by the prestigious Royal Society of Medicine with an award recognising excellence in temporal bone drilling. This national competition, open to all ENT surgeons in the UK, gathered highly skilled participants including both newly appointed consultants and trainee surgeons. Professor Veer performed a meticulous procedure on the mastoid bone, successfully revealing crucial anatomical structures — the facial nerve, inner ear components, the dura mater, and the internal auditory canal — achieving an exceptionally thin yet intact bone layer over the dura mater. The award ceremony was held at the Royal Society of Medicine near Oxford Street.

Innovation

Clinician-Designed Sleep Pillows — Now Available

Translating over a decade of sleep surgery research into consumer products, Professor Veer has developed and launched two clinically informed pillows under the I Want Great Sleep brand. Both are designed directly from his findings in practice — including the landmark audit of 6,044 patients showing that 60.3% achieved normalisation of their sleep apnoea severity simply by sleeping on their side.

The Side Sleep Pro

A two-piece system — head pillow and body pillow — engineered to keep users comfortably in the recovery position throughout the night. The recovery position angles the face slightly downward, using gravity to pull the tongue and soft tissue forward rather than letting it collapse into the throat. The system accommodates CPAP machines, provides shoulder support, and prevents the common causes of back-rolling that defeat simpler solutions. It has been tested across body weights from 40 kg to 140 kg.

The Dual Comfort Pro

A double-sided anti-snoring pillow with two distinct surfaces: a low-recoil side that holds the user gently in position through the night, and a springy breathable side that relieves ear pressure and improves airflow. An adjustable shredded memory foam insert allows personalised height and firmness. Designed as a more accessible entry point into positional therapy.

Enhancing NHS Theatre Efficiency

Professor Veer played a pivotal role in developing a system that dramatically increased the efficiency of NHS theatres. Before this innovative system was implemented, the team was limited to performing just 8 tonsillectomy operations per day. With the new system, they can now complete at least 26 tonsillectomies in the same timeframe — more than three times as many.

The success of this system extended beyond tonsillectomies. Following its implementation, the hospital saw a threefold increase in the number of skin cancer and urology operations, substantially reducing waiting times and allowing for better patient care. Data from its implementation has been shared with NHS England, and many hospitals across the country have since adopted similar strategies.

Education & Charitable Work

Founding and Leading Prepared For ENT

Professor Veer is the founder and director of Prepared For ENT, a registered charity dedicated to providing exceptional educational courses for ENT doctors. These courses are recognised as the highest rated of their kind in the country, and are delivered by senior ENT surgeon volunteers who generously share their expertise without any financial compensation.

Under Professor Veer's leadership, Prepared For ENT has made a significant impact on the medical community by offering top-tier educational opportunities that enhance the skills and knowledge of ENT professionals.

Beyond its educational mission, Prepared For ENT extends its reach to charitable endeavours. All profits generated from the courses are channelled into impactful projects in Africa, including the establishment of a chicken farm and the creation of a specialised high-calorie broth for malnourished children in local hospitals — demonstrating the charity's commitment to improving health and well-being on a global scale.

Founder of the School of Surgery at BHR Hospital Trust

Professor Veer is the founder of the innovative 'School of Surgery' at BHR Hospital Trust. This system was designed to address a critical issue: the hospital was losing £500,000 a month on locum doctors to fill vacant junior doctor shifts.

To understand the root of the problem, Professor Veer engaged with the doctors and discovered that the lack of career progression and learning opportunities deterred them from taking permanent roles. In response, he developed a rotation system that moves junior doctors through the hospital, providing them with an educational supervisor and funding to pursue higher university degrees. The system offers exposure across ENT, general surgery, orthopaedics, neurosurgery, and vascular surgery. Doctors now typically stay for two years, gaining diverse experience and preparing to apply for higher surgical training — which was previously unattainable for many.

The hospital no longer has unfilled junior doctor posts, resulting in substantial financial savings each month. Although Professor Veer no longer leads this project, he takes immense pride in having established a system that significantly enhances both patient care and the hospital's financial standing.
